Welcome to the website of Mirko Kück!

Dr.-Ing. Mirko Kück

Data Scientist at Mercedes-Benz AG, Bremen, Germany

Trainer for Data Science, Business Analytics and Artificial Intelligence

12+ years experience in scientific research as well as industrial and business economics applications regarding data science, machine learning, time series forecasting and artificial intelligence

I am currently working as a data scientist at Mercedes-Benz in Bremen, Germany. My work is focussed on data science projects at the maintenance department but I am also conducting digitalization and data science projects in other areas, such as quality control and manufacturing processes as well as future projects regarding the new Mercedes-Benz Operating System, which is needed to realize autonomous driving. Moreover, I am responsible to teach engineers, workers and managers regarding tools and processes of data science, business analytics and artificial intelligence.

Prior to that, I was a research scientist at the BIBA - Bremer Institut für Produktion und Logistik GmbH at the University of Bremen, Germany. My Ph.D. (Dr.-Ing.) thesis regarding "A hybrid meta-learning approach for the automted selection and combination of suitable time series forecasting models for production planning" was awarded with summa cum laude. Moreover I was a lecturer at the University of Bremen and I was leading an international project group of 20 members from research and industry.

My research is on data science and Industry 4.0 applications, such as predictive maintenance, meta-learning for automated model selection, time series forecasting, real-time production planning and control, digital twins or artificial intelligence applications in industry and business economics. I am looking for interdisciplinary opportunities and contacts to enhance my latest research, in academia as well as in business economics and industrial applications.

Short Bio

Dr.-Ing. Mirko Kück is a data scientist at Mercedes-Benz in Bremen, Germany. Focussed on the digitalization of the maintenance department, he leads different projects, such as "Operational digitalization in maintenance" as well as the cooperation project with the University of Bremen "AutoCBM - A meta-learning approach for automatic condition-based maintenance". Apart from the maintenance department, he conducts data science and digitalization projects in other departments, such as quality control, manufacturing processes as well as future projects regarding the new Mercedes-Benz Operating System needed for autonomous driving. Moreover, he is responsible to teach engineers, workers and managers in the areas of data science, business analytics and artificial intelligence, so that they gain the ability to utilize innovative analytics and data science tools in their daily work. In 2019 he was leading the project "Predictive rework" at Mercedes-Benz U.S. International in Alabama, USA.

Prior to that, Mirko Kück was a research scientist at the BIBA - Bremer Institut für Produktion und Logistik GmbH at the University of Bremen. He studied Mathematics at the University of Bremen with a particular emphasis on Statistics and Business Economics as an additional subject. After graduating with the German diploma (Dipl.-Math., grade "very good") in 2010, he joined the BIBA as a research scientist and project manager. From 2016-2018 he was leading an international team of 20 members from research and industry working on different research projects in the areas of data-driven production control, digital twins as well as data science for predictive maintenance. Moreover his Ph.D. (Dr.-Ing.) thesis was awarded with summa cum laude at the University of Bremen regarding the research topic "A hybrid meta-learning approach for the automted selection and combination of suitable time series forecasting models for production planning".

Over the years, Mirko Kück successfully acquired several externally funded grants (DFG, DAAD, IIF, WFB, BAB) for original research projects as well as international research visits. From 2016-2018 he was a visiting researcher at the Department of Production and Systems Engineering of the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), Florianópolis, Brazil.

Among other topics, Mirko Kück is currently conducting research in the areas of predictive maintenance and data science. In order to solve the complex and dynamic problems, he mainly applies methods from data analytics / machine learning, statistics, modeling and simulation, simulation-based optimization, neural networks and artificial intelligence. Mirko Kück published more than 20 articles in international journals and conference proceedings and also served as a reviewer for many. He presented his work on several national and international research conferences and industry workshops. Besides, he also organized research conferences and industry meetings.

In addition to his research work, Mirko Kück has been teaching undergraduate and graduate classes as a lecturer and tutor at the University of Bremen in particular regarding modeling and simulation focussing on discrete-event simulation and system dynamics. Moreover, he served as an invited guest lecturer at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) at Florianopolis, Brazil to hold the lecture "Theory and Applications of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence in Operations Management".  Furthermore, he has been supervising student projects as well as multiple Master and Bachelor theses as second supervisor.
